Bare bones Hostel, which is overpriced for its standard because it has a virtual monopoly on being the only ‘cheap’ accommodation in the area. Unless you are camping at Hild which is cheaper. I booked direct with bedding as an extra which was just over £49 for one night. Had to go to the separate Hild reception building to book in & pay on arrival where you get your key to the room & you get given your bed number. I wasn’t keen on the bed configuration here, no dividers, so if you happen to be tall you may end up brushing feet with the person sleeping at the other end. Personally, I wasn’t keen on the central ladders to the bunks either, as you could easily be disturbed or disturb somebody else who is sleeping. The kitchen is basic but functional. The showers look as if they have been relatively recently updated. But you have 13 rooms of 4 bunks = 52 people and only four showers. Good job I was up at 5am, otherwise there may have been a queue for them. There was a slight smell of sulphur using the hot water, not a problem, it wasn’t overpowering. Eating area is pretty cool to be fair with its view of the lava field. Check in is between 5-8pm only.

Great hostel.... very clean and lovely location.

I would definitely come back. The dining room is delightful amongst the Lava.

The beds were incredibly noisy..... you felt guilty for every movement as they kept everyone awake. This was true in room 5.

In general the place is good, kitchen, bathrooms and showers were fine. The biggest problem unfortunately is the most important, the room. There is no separation between the beds, this means there is no privacy but mainly you cannot sleep when the light in the next bed is on. Look my roommate backing up his photos at 1am, and isn’t his fault.

A curtain would help. The lamps are unnecessarily very strong, why not weaker and more focal lamps? It’s compromised my entire night.

The hostel has a good location, however, it is not worth its price. The cabins are neither insulated nor water tight; which caused staining in my coat (see photo). Although there are heaters, the rooms do not properly heat up and you’ll be forced to wear hiking clothes to stay warm INSIDE the cabin. The toilet facilities are kept clean but they are a 2 minute walk away. The shared kitchen is essentially a tent with 4 stoves which does not keep out the cold. If you want to stay in the region, you should rather stay in the hostel next door.

It was our 6th day in Iceland so by that time we figured that campsites can be bad. So we decided to check them out before checking in. Hlid didn't really look too appealing. The facilities looked old and tired and untidy. No personal shower stalls so you have to wash and dress in a common area. On top of that, at 2400 ISK it happened to be the most expensive camp we saw. The staff are nice though.

worked well for staying over a night in Myvtan. Room was decently spacious for 4 people and comfortable bunk beds. Curtains were not blackout. Kitchen had 2 of everything (ovens, fridge, sink, stove etc) and a good amount of space, making it feasible for multiple parties to cook and prepare meals simultaneously. Lots of tables and seating. No issues with lines for bathroom or shower.

this campsite was great. The bathrooms were very modern and clean. There were two sets of toilets - one close to reception and one further out. Both nice. The sites were level and the view was beautiful. If staying here, bring a head net. This was the only place on our trip that we encountered midges, and they were full force! Overall nice stay.

Kinda your only option for budget accommodations in the area. The room was fine. The showers were really tiny and smelled. The kitchen is a decent size, but was overrun by guests for hours... Would stay again, but that's more because there is no other option for a hostel in this area. We also booked two beds, and were put in separate rooms?
