This is heaven on earth. A private Island all to yourself. Hákon is a wonderful host and his staff are great. Everyone speaks English as well as many other languages. You camp in yurts in view of the volcano that stopped the world flights also a beautiful glacier. It is the most serene environment. Went to the river and pulled out fresh salmon which Hakon cleaned. We then had fresh sushi and soy on the spot. Sleeping in a cosy yurt is something everyone should experience. The warmth and quiet is amazing. Beds super comfy. Best sleep ever. The restaurant yurt is so cosy with a pot belly stove in the centre and a feast of the best salmon in the world. An overall experience not to be missed. Will definitely return again.

We loved every minute of our stay. The Yurts were nicely equipped with comfortable beds and duvets. We had two kids and a dog and everybody enjoyed wandering around the small island after getting interesting history lessons from Hakon (the host). In the evening he even provided us with salmon from the river that he helped us cook over open fire with spices our boys picked up just a few meters away. First class experience.

Our stay on Traustholtsholmi was magical in every way. It was adventurous and quite romantic to abandon the car and take the boat from the mainland with Hakon and Skuggi. The yurts are luxurious with super comfy beds and blankets. The 360 views are stunning and there's much to explore on such a small island. The food was delicious; we loved participating in the catching of salmon - our son even gutted a fish after watching the master. I've never had a morning shower with such a great view out of the window. Hakon is the coolest person we've ever met and it was an honour to share his island, even if only for one day, in this unique way. We will never forget it and hope we can stay longer next time.

It’s the simple things that make this experience extraordinary. Being taken to the island in the owner (Hákon)’s small boat. Being welcomed on the island by Skuggi, Hákon’s fluffy and very friendly dog, who will happily take a stroll with you if you are to walk around the island in the evening to catch the sunset. Hearing about the history of the island by Hákon, who is taking it at heart to respect the way things have been done by past generations. Eating fresh salmon ceviche and sushi by the pier right after fishing it. Relaxing in the living room or living Yurt! while the salmon is cooking on the grill. Taking an indoor shower facing the river. Encountering a few seals on your way around the island. And the best of the best, sliding under the most comfortable covers and sleeping in the beautiful Yurt that has been prepared for you (candles, extra blankets, drinking water)||Hákon, a warm thank you for welcoming us onto your island. We arrived as customers but we sure left as guests.|

The host is the most amazing and interesting guy you'll ever meet. The beautiful island gives peace to the mind. The host catches and serves you salmon fresh out of the river. You will sleep better than ever in the yurts, you will eat the freshest and most delicious salmon you will ever taste and you will have loads of fun along side it.|If you go to Iceland, you have to go to this place. It will be one of the best choices you will have ever make!

I am Icelandic and there are very few places I have not visited in my home country. Traustholtshólmi was one of those few places and what a rare gem!||I can not recommend it enough. The beauty of the island, the rustic hospitality of Hákon (the host and owner of the island), the yurts and the fantastic salmon fresh out of the water. ||The evening dinner is also a fantastic way to meet other travelers in relaxed cercumstances and make friends from far away in magical circumstances. ||The island is not only an unforgettable location but also a sustainability experiment and a unique approach to how to experience Iceland in the midst of the mass tourism wave the threatens Iceland. ||I can not recommend it enough. This is Iceland at its truest!

Its hard to explain the magic of the place. In its simplicity, there is a raw beauty and cleanliness to the experience that sort of whipped our souls clean and prepared us for our 10 days in Iceland. Hakon’s island was our first stop and a night there seemed surreal. The host and his dog are ripped right out of a book. For all those searching for the current definition of what it means to be a man – do yourself a favor and take a trip to this place to meet the host. ||||From walking around and plucking wild edibles to eating fresh salmon sashimi from the river to taking a morning dip and showering over looking the delta…. It was a hard experience to top. The yurts are of course a cool part of it, but there is so much more than meets the eye.

Sure we had worries. No electricity? Having to walk to the bathroom? No WIFI!?!?!||||NO PROBLEM!!||||We exchanged e-mails with Hákon a few days before our visit and got explicit directions to the parking area across the river. Not sure how he knew we were there, although we did arrive within minutes of the 5PM check in time. We flashed our headlights and honked, but the wind and river surely made the honk silent on the island. ||||In moments we saw a motor skiff approach with Hákon and his dog Skuggi. He grabbed life jackets for us (not needed, but a nice touch) and helped with luggage. ||||Hint: Take less than you think you need. Toothbrush. Clean underwear. Maybe fresh clothes for tomorrow if you are leaving or just put the others back on. You don't need to dress for dinner or to bring any other comforts. He's got soap and shampoo, and your electronics won't do you any good.||||We got settled in our yurt quickly and found out we were the only guests that evening! A quick walk to the south end of the island found us near a dock where our host unveiled a salmon he had caught (the net is RIGHT THERE) and had already gutted. He sharpened a knife and prepared fresh salmon sashimi right there at the dock, with a little lemon and soy sauce. SO fresh and SO good. He also marinated a little salmon with lemon and salt and we had terrific ceviche after a few minutes of "cooking".||||Back to the yurt via a quick tour of the island where Hákon showed us relics of past generations of his family and historical Iceland, where he has reclaimed century old gardens where he grows potatoes, etc, and a tree grove his grandparents had planted. There aren't many old trees on Iceland! Hákon is serious about history and environmentalism and it shows in every touch.||||Dinner was about an hour later, as the rest of the salmon was grilled on the open BBQ he has over a wood fire, along with potatoes from his garden and other sides.||||Dessert was amazing rhubarb.||||Bathroom is about 40 steps from the yurt we had (the blue one), others (red and orange) are a bit further. Shower is 20-30 steps further away.||||Beds are VERY comfortable with typical duvets, great sheets, and lots of blankets. Adjustable gas heater warms the place up quite quickly and keeps it warm all night. Some battery operated lights and candles provide more light and there is a bright flashlight for midnight walks. Everything was spotless, which is amazing considering the elements. No leaks even with heavy rains.||||We had a full moon which provided so much light the flashlight wasn't needed. No Northern Lights, unfortunately, due to the moon and lack of activity.||||Breakfast was less memorable, but filling and tasty.||||Leaving the island was an experience, as it was windy and rainy, and we (and our luggage) got quite wet running to the skiff and on the ride across the river, but you are going to get wet going from most lodging in Iceland to your car.||||Definitely a highlight of our visit to Iceland, heck, a highlight of our 5 visits so far to Iceland. A once in a lifetime event
